Gear selection shapes how your Toyota feels every time you accelerate. If it changes down too readily or shifts repeatedly on a gentle climb, there may be scope to improve its response through calibration. Use the torque you already have

On supported Toyota platforms, calibration revises the shift strategy to reduce unnecessary kickdowns and repeated changes between gears. We refine upshifts and downshifts around accelerator input, load and the engine’s useful torque range, helping the gearbox hold the right gear and respond when you need it.

Instead of constantly chasing revs, the transmission can make better use of the engine’s useful torque range. That can make cruising, towing and gradual climbs feel more composed. It still needs to select a lower gear when the workload calls for it.

Custom calibration, developed on the road

We spend many hours road testing and refining Toyota gearbox calibrations. Our development looks at the gear ratios, the revs the engine lands at after each shift, and the flow between upshifts and downshifts. We assess light-throttle driving, full-throttle acceleration and changing loads to bring the engine and gearbox together.

The 2.8 Land Cruiser is a good example. At roughly 0–30% accelerator input, early third-to-fourth and fourth-to-fifth shifts can leave the engine labouring before another downshift is needed. At full throttle, shifts can come too late. Our custom calibration addresses both behaviours using the results of extensive road testing and development.
